Debby Karemera, Rwanda

Debby holds a bachelor’s degree in Guidance and Counseling with a minor in Social Work from the University of Eastern Africa Baraton (UEAB) in Kenya. For the past decade, she has dedicated her career to Never Again Rwanda (NAR), a prominent Peacebuilding and Social Justice organization. Her expertise spans trauma healing, genocide prevention, conflict management, and peacebuilding. Debby has held diverse roles at NAR, including Peace Education Unit Manager, Head of Peacebuilding and Genocide Prevention, Coordinator of the Peacebuilding Institute, and most recently served as a Strategic Advisor.

During her tenure, Debby has spearheaded strategic planning initiatives and co-facilitated safe spaces for peace, fostering healing among both youth and adults. She has also conducted training sessions on healing, peace education, and genocide prevention.

Excited to have been selected as a Duke-UNC Rotary Peace Fellow, Debby is eager to embark on the Master of Social Work program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her primary goal is to enhance her knowledge of evidence-based research, community practice, and advocacy, particularly focusing on supporting diverse populations, including refugees. Following graduation, Debby aims to pursue a career as a social researcher, committed to conducting evidence-based research on critical societal issues and advocating for the successful re-integration of refugees
