Newman Aguiar is the Host Area Coordinator for the Duke-UNC Rotary Peace Center and is a longtime member of the Rotary Club of Durham in District 7710. He serves as President of Mowbot of the Triangle, a robotic lawn mowing company, and has specialized in providing information technology solutions for small and medium-sized businesses for over 35 years.
The Rotary motto "Service Above Self" has guided Newman's involvement in the Durham community. In 2006, the Rotary Club of Durham recognized him as Rotarian of the Year and honored him with the Nicholas B. Fagan Award for exemplary service to the club. He is a graduate of Rotary Leadership Institute and has served on and led various district committees, including Group Study Exchange, District Conference and Membership. He is Past President of the Durham Rotary Club (2010-11), Past Governor of Rotary International District 7710 (2015-16) and District Rotary Foundation Chair (2017-2020). He has also been recognized as the District 7710 Rotarian of the Year (2017-18) and has received the Rotary International Citation of Meritorious Service (2018).
Newman is focused on issues related to homelessness and affordable housing, and is Past Board Chairman of Urban Ministries of Durham. He served on the founding Board of the Community Empowerment Fund, has served as the Board Chairman of the Durham Social Services Commission and Vice-Chairman of the Central North Carolina Chapter of the American Red Cross. He has worked with Durham CAN, political leaders and service providers to develop a unified intake system for homeless families in Durham and is developing opportunities for individuals who are hard to employ.
He and his wife Ann-Louise are proud to be Tar Heels, one born and one bred, and both are graduates of UNC-Chapel Hill. They enjoy living in Durham's Trinity Park and escape to the North Carolina mountains whenever possible with their rambunctious Labrador Retriever.
